African Interior Design – Inspiration and Tips

African Interior Design – Inspiration and Tips

Africa is one of the most unique regions on the planet today, and Kenya has its own distinctive and exotic style. While other parts of the world that were once considered exotic have become rather westernised, and the influences of Scandinavian and even Asian interior design are now so much a part of our world that they seem mundane, African interior design remains special and unusual.

African Interior Design

Iconic Kenyan Design

African interior design is as varied as African culture, but there is one constant that can be seen in designs from everywhere from Kenya to Namibia, and that is the influence of earthy tones and animals. African culture and therefore African décor, places a lot of importance on animals and nature. You can expect to see wood carvings, animals skin rugs, earthy, neutral paints and dark mahogany masks in most African homes. These ornaments and decorations exist to provide a reminder of the power and virility of nature.

Carved wooden sculptures and ornaments are a part of African tradition. Most African cultures take pride in handicrafts, and handmade pouches and purses as well as shields and even walking sticks are common features in most homes.

The Evolution of Kenyan Design

Handmade items, animal skins and tribal symbols are things that have a long history in African tribal culture and are still common even in Kenyan homes today. However, Kenyan interior design has evolved a lot in recent years. Sandstone and terracotta tiles have been replaced with plain concrete floors that are stained for a rustic look. Thick sisal mats are now popular, and today’s designers are painting walls with textured, vibrant paints. Modern Kenyan design is clutter-free, with each decoration chosen to add depth and vibrance.

Famous Designers from Kenya

One of the most famous deign companies in Kenya is IKON Designs. This company has worked with a range of businesses to create corporate offices that combine the branding of the company in question with the vibrance of African design.

On a more personal level, Suzanne Kasler is one of the most famous designers working in Kenya. One of her most interesting recent projects was the development of an open air home. Her compound, made of four palm-thatched cottages that feature rounded walls. The interior is charming and rustic, and the home offers amazing views of a safari area – with live elephants, zebras and lions – offering the perfect Kenyan viewing experience.

Tips to Get The Look

Kenyan interior design is bold, energetic and vibrant. Fill the room with carvings, sculptures and handicrafts.

Add animal decorations such as faux fur rugs and carved animal sculptures for an authentic African feel.

Use dark furniture and dark wood internal doors to add depths and a feeling of luxury to the room. Accent this with energetic colours on the walls. Consider painting one wall in the room brighter than the others for extra vibrancy and to create a focal point.

Use bold, powerful textures and patterns on your rugs, throws and cushions and opt for rich soft furnishings to add a sense of luxury.

Kenyan interior design favours warmth and vibrant colours. Orange, gold, black and silver are all good choices, but anything that is powerful and bold is a good choice. Avoid pastels if you are aiming for an authentic African look.
