Halloween Doors Ideas

Why should door decoration be the realm of Christmas? With Halloween just around the corner, and a little creativity, you can create a stunning seasonal aesthetic that tips a hat to the spookiest time of year.

Halloween Door Ideas

Putting up Halloween door decorations is a great way to signal to trick-or-treaters that you want to be involved in the spooktacular evening. And adding your own twist can help you really stand out in your neighbourhood.

Here are our top five favourite DIY Halloween door decorations as found on Instagram:

The Simple Front Door Sign

There are some incredibly detailed designs in this post, but you don’t have to go all out if that’s not your style. _WinterAndWillow proves that with this simple sign and a few fake bats stuck onto a front door. It may be more ‘cute’ than ‘scary,’ but we’re alright with that.

The Mixed Bag

We love the stunning wreath and mixed uncarved pumpkins in this picture posted by MonicaJoyHome. They exude elegance and add texture to the front of their home morning, noon, and at dusk.

The additional warning banner and humorous pumpkin inside the hanging basket add charm and whimsy.

Pulling Everything out of the Bag

This door is the epitome of pulling all of the tricks (or treats) out of the bag. From the entryway light and uncarved pumpkins to the fake cobwebs, witches and witches hats, this has ‘fun’ written all over it. This eerie decor is created by TheQueenOfHalloween365.

The Front Door Giving Christmas a Run for Its Money

Our jaws dropped when we saw this Instagram picture posted by VineAndFlowerCo. It’s magical yet somehow perfectly suits the creepy season.

While there’s a lot going on here, it doesn’t go ‘too far.’ We love the lighting that runs up the railings, the door wreath and the dried flowers hanging from the front porch.

Fun for all Ages

Who doesn’t like balloons? Whether you’re five or fifty, you’d be proud of this fun yet positively spooky Halloween decor – thanks to the fake skulls embedded within the autumnal balloons. This was posted by Fig_And_Form and we love it.

How to Decorate Your Door for Halloween

Using the above decorating ideas, here are a few examples of how you can spruce up your front door for the spooky season.

A Wreath

A tried and tested classic is the Halloween wreath. If you stick with autumnal colours and leaves, with a few ‘scary’ elements thrown in, you’ll have something fun that you can keep hanging right up until the Christmas season.

Lighting

Creating light (whether battery-operated ‘candles’ or strings of electric lights) may feel like the opposite of Halloween, as the above examples have shown, they add a layer of elegance to an otherwise eerie front door.

If you want to attach battery-operated candles directly to your door, consider using fishing lines so that they look like they’re floating in front of your door.

Chilling Signs

From scary, funny or cheery signs wishing people a happy Halloween, signs are a great way to add personality to your front door or to let people know to come in to your Halloween party. Whether you’re designing your own banners to hang or buying something pre-designed, there are tons of options available.

Hanging Baskets

If you want to leave something sweet for trick-or-treaters but don’t want to keep answering the door, consider a hanging basket of sweets for people to help themselves to. Pop a sign up to let people know they are welcome to take a sweet or two (we recommend not putting out any sweets that contain nuts, just to be on the safe side).

Door Garland

Halloween door decorations don’t have to be scary or replicate the entrance to a haunted house. For a beauteous effect, why not dress your front door with a garland?

We love the mix of autumnal leaves and pumpkins in the above example.

How Do You Hang Halloween Decorations On a Door?

From double-sided tape to command strips, it’s can be confusing to know what will protect your door as well as allow you to enjoy your Halloween door makeover.

Here are some hard and fast rules:

AvoidUse Instead
Duct tape or any other type of tape

Nails and screws, unless you plan to have a seasonal wreath all year round
Over-the-door hooks like you would find in bathrooms or bedrooms (line the bottom so they won’t scratch your door)

Command hooks, just check the weight they can hold

A fishing line works well with command hooks to decorate with a ‘floating’ effect

If your door has a glass panel, you can use suction hooks and hang your DIY Halloween door decorations from that.
