When you own a property itβs vital to keep certain areas up to scratch in order to avoid future problems and unexpected costs. After all, your home is the single most expensive thing you will buy in your lifetime. We all have a tendency to put those niggling home care tasks off until later, when we should really prioritise and ensure our homes are well maintained and cared for. You might be a property manager with tenants to consider, or a homeowner with a family to look after, either way maintaining your home is an important task. Upholding your property might earn you extra brownie points with your other (or better) half, too! So there are no excuses for not keeping on top of your property maintenance tasks.
However, property maintenance isnβt something you can do as a one-off and leave for the rest of the year. Itβs an all year round task that needs your attention and care. Certain parts of your house, and everything that goes with it demand your attention at different times of the year. Our handy guide will tell you where to focus your attention at which times of year to ensure your home remains in tip top shape.

In the spring your focus should be on cleaning, clearing out and preparing the outdoors for better weather. Check the outside of your property such as your external doors and repair any damage that may have been caused by harsh winter weather before things get worse. Bring out garden furniture and check for damage, as well as planning and preparing your garden for the summer months.
During the summer you can make the most of lighter nights and warmer weather. Complete any outdoor jobs like exterior painting, fence or patio repairs and decking care. Clear outdoor spaces like the garage and shed, and care for any trees in your garden.
When autumn begins to set in, clean and store that garden furniture away. Give your barbecue a good, thorough clean too so it doesnβt rust or corrode when in winter storage. Prepare decking for the winter by washing it and repairing or painting it. It is also important to make sure the anti-freezing feature on your boiler is on to prevent pipes freezing in the winter weather.
During the cold, winter months take the opportunity to tackle some indoor jobs. Tighten up any loose screws, fix broken internal door handles and de-clutter before the holiday season starts. When the spring comes around, begin your maintenance cycle again for a happy home that runs like clockwork!
